ZO in den vroegen morgen regen, dog klaarde met de zon op, koel weer z:o: wind. vertrokken twe uren z ten oosten aan, repasserende de plaats van Cristiaan opperman daar wy agter de swarte rivier, een moye cascade sagten maken, namen onse cours o z o aan na vier uren distantie quamen op de plaats van enen venter waarby wy eerst de swarte rivier waarin de kleine sondagsrivier hier by ingelopen was en een quartier daarna de gatsrivier passeerden. zynde allen zeer ondiep.
arriveerden om agt uren des avonds op de plaats de fontein van greve waar wy vernagten, onse cours is geweest eerst twe uren z: t: o: daarna agt a negen uren o z o houdende het Sneeuwgebergte, al aan onse linkerhand dan eens wat nader dan wat verder dog meest op een paar uren, dog er springen ook ruggens uit die nader zyn

hebben dus de camdebo verlaten en hiet dit, onder Sneeuberg op onse regterhand zag niets als een vlak afdragend velt met enige hoge bergen, ook gingen wy afdragende, tot daar de voornoemde kleine riviertjes doorlopen waarna wy moest vlak dan eens rysende dan dalende door caro velt trokken, waarwy grote troppen springbokken zagen en ene trop van by de hondert noes ook enige hiergenaamde hartebeesten, dog hielden zig reeds buiten schoot, zag ook twe secretarissen, en twe jakhalsen die agter de springbokken joegen.
dit gehele velt is wel versien van polipentaden. omtrent een uur van greves plaats word het caro velt seer boscasie agtig, dog de struiken niet hoger als tien en twaalf voet veel cotelidons, die men hier spekbonen noemt, hier onthouden zig veel buffels coedoes, en ook leeuwen, hebbende zy voor ses maanden nog een wagen op hol gebragt, also wanneer de beesten of paarden zo een dier ruiken, gaan zy meest op hol. vernamen niets, dog de hond sloeg twe driemaal in dit kreupelbos aan.
het climaat was hier warmer, met gehele swermen vliegen vooral in de huisen, dewelke indien ze beter de menschen zouden delogeren, op de plaats van venter sneed men het graan al. het weer is aangenaam dog warm op den dag en kout in den avond geweest, eerst zoals wy uit voorby het reusen casteel raakten z w waarna den gehelen agtemiddag zuid en fris zo tegen avond.

South-east wind. Rain in the early morning but cleared up at sunrise. Cool weather; south-east wind.
Departed south by east for two hours repassing the farm of Cristiaan Opperman where we saw a fine waterfall beyond the Swarte River. We took our course east-south-east for a distance of four hours and arrived at the farm of a certain Venter, where we first crossed the Swart River (into which the Kleine Sondags River flows here) and a quarter of an hour after that we crossed the Gaats River, all very shallow. At eight o'clock in the evening we reached Greef's farm, De Fontein, where we spent the night. Our route was first south by east for two hours and then eight or nine hours east-south-east, always keeping the Sneeuberg mountains on our left. These were first closer and then somewhat further, but mostly about two hours away. But there are also ridges jutting out which are closer.

We have thus left the Camdebo and this place is called Onder Sneeuberg. On our right hand side saw nothing but a flat countryside falling away with some high mountains. We were also travelling downhill as well to where the aforementioned small streams flow through, after which we had to trek through karoo-type land, flat but then rising for a bit and falling. Here we saw great herds of springbok and a herd of about a hundred gnus as well as some hartebeest, as they are here called; but they stayed out of range most of the time. Also saw two secretary birds and two jackals chasing after the springbok. This whole countryside is well-populated by guineafowl. About an hour from Greef's farm the karoo-veld becomes very bushy but the bushes are not higher than ten or twelve foot. There are many cotyledons which are here called spekbomen. This place is frequented by many buffalo, kudu and also lions. Six months ago they caused a wagon to be abandoned because, when the oxen or horses smell an animal of this sort, they mostly take flight. We heard and saw nothing, but the dog barked two or three times at the undergrowth. The climate was hotter here with whole swarms of flies, especially in the houses, which, had they bitten would have caused people to leave. They were already cutting grain on Venter's farm. The weather is pleasant but was hot during the day and cold in the evening. Only when we had passed the Reuse Casteel did the wind blow south-west, after which it was south for the whole afternoon and was a fresh south-easter towards evening.
