Fine weather though cloudy. Rained a little last night. I am here at an excellent place to complete my triangulation. I can take bearings on the snow on the Hex River mountains, and also from these mountains on everything towards the Cape. Saw a capon here that always looks after a mixed flock of chickens and ducklings with the greatest care. There are many of them in these parts.
This afternoon rode east-south-east for two and a half miles on a mountainous road to the baths behind Cogglemanskloof in the Keissi (or Ugly) River. Passed immense cliffs behind Kooshoogte; stony, bushy Karoo-veld.
Concerning a kind of sheep which they call blinkschapen (shiny sheep): their wool is very fine, but with some hair in it on top. Their fleece begins to fall off around this time, which is a sign they are ready for shearing.
Had much rain from the south-east. Cold. Thermometer 56 - 60 - 58 degrees
Kooshoogte is half a mile east-south-east from here
The watershed is on Conradie’s farm, Concordia: the Kleigat River, Diep River, Blaauwfontein, Jakalvlei, Gordonsfontein, Samagoos River, Middelste River, Leste River, Diepe Kom River, all come together to form the Koos River in the defile at Bekker’s. The Witwater River also comes in here.
We have passed Eselsjagt, the farm of Wouter de Vos. The deepest kloof at Bekker’s is called Keerom, it then forms the Neui and runs beside a certain Cari just before Brandvlei; and then together, first into the Hex River and then into the Breede River; all come from the Koosbergen.
