vertrokken over enige ruggen n:w: aan 2½ myl tot Steenkamp elands fontein. daar de downits riv: begint. en n w aanloopt.
vond een bosjemans meid n t o van hier even geschapen als de anderen myn koerikei verstond haar volmaakt. van steenkamp een berg over, daar wy seer afdragende een schoon pad vonden. hier leken de bergen even als in de Camdebo reusen cast: deselve krantsen hier begint de hantam streek. hieten een deser bergen aan myn regterhand de redoubt. zag hier enige bubalissen. sag een op sig selven leggend gebergte. daar agter hantam berg 2½ myl z. en n. ook op sig selven, plats boven als reusen Cast.
passeerde na 2 myl douwnits droge riv: en een ¼ een plaats van Schalkwyk die na dit water hiet. draajde meer na w n w aan de z: zyde der hantams berg na een ½ myl de plaats van gows. en na een ½ myl by andries van zyl. op ackerendam veertien plaatsen. daar van 12 bewoondt. in de hantam. leggende rond de berg.

Fine weather; south-west wind. Thermometer: 65 - 82 - 73.
Departed north west two and a half miles over some ridges to Steenkamp’s, at Elandsfontein, where the Downits River begins and then flows north-west.
Found a bushman girl north-east from here who had the same features as the others. My Koerikei understood her perfectly. From Steenkamp we went over a mountain where we found a very good road though very steep downhill. The mountains here resemble those of the Camdeboo at Reuze Casteel. The same cliffs. The Hantam district begins here. We named one of the mountains on out right side the Redoubt. Saw some bubalis here. Saw a mountain range that stands on its own, there two and a half miles south and north behind the Hantam mountains also on their own. On top as flat as at Reuze Casteel. After two miles we passed the dry Douwnits river, and a quarter of a mile further on, a farm of Schalkwyk’s which has the same name as the river. Turned more to the west-north-west on the south side of the Hantamsberg and after half a mile came to Gouw’s farm and, after another half-mile, to Adriaan van Zyl’s. At Akkerendam there are fourteen farms, twelve of which are occupied, on the Hantam, situated around the mountain. The flies are a terrible nuisance, they fly in swarms from one place to the other. They are a nuisance even at night.
