vertrokken het riviertje verder op eerst n:o: daarna oost. over rhebokshoogte tot dat de ossen voor de kleine roggeveld staan bleven.. reed vooruit en vond enen coertie. liet de wagen haalen, vond alles in confusie door dien de drank slegt bewaard was.
coertjees water is het begin der grote riv: loopt in de oliphants riv: eerst formeert een soutpan by braks fontein, de Smitswinkel riv loopt een half uur van ons pad in grote riv: het andere water van botman nodde en krieger maakt buffel riv.

alles klei met klippen in klein roggeveld. zynde grote ruggens in de caro uitspringende. wilde rog garst en rhinoster en andere bosjes. geen rhinos: bosjes in de caro twe uren van Smitswinkel tot rheboks hoogte 2 uur tot klein rog velt hoogte een uur na Courtie: tanqua riv begint w n w ½ myl van hier by appel fontein loopt langs de caro die door middel roggevelt getermineert word. n in oliphants riv:

Fine weather. Fresh east wind. Thermometer: 65 - 90 - 73.

We departed, going further up the rivulet, first north-east then east over Reebokshoogte until the oxen remained halted in front of the Kleine Rogge Veld. I rode ahead and found a man called Coertie [Cortje]. Ordered the wagon to be fetched. Found all in confusion because the drink had been badly guarded. The water at Coertie’s is the beginning of the Groote River. It runs into the Oliphants River but first forms a salt-pan at Braksfontein. The Smitswinkel River runs into the Groote River half an hour from our route. Other waters, those of Bottman, Nodde, and Krieger, form the Buffels River.

Barometer 25 inches and ­ 9 tenths. Everywhere in the Kleine Roggeveld one finds clay with stones. There are large ridges rising in the Karoo. Wild rye, barley, rhinoceros-bush and other plants. No Rhinoceros-bush in the Karoo. Two hours from Smitswinkel to Reebokshoogte; two hours to Kleine Roggeveld hoogte; one hour to Coertie. The Tanquas River starts at Appelfontein, half a mile west-north-west of here, runs alongside the Karoo River which terminates in the middle of the Roggeveld, then into the Oliphants River. Thermometer: 70 - 95. Coene’s ridge is the western end of the Kleine Roggeveld.
