Clear weather. Fresh east wind. Left in order to go further along the beach across Krom River to Tsitsikamma (which means 'Where water begins'). Ordered the wagon to travel via Leeuwe- and Esse-bos in order to wait for me at the Lange Kloof. To get to the shore I had to cross the Kromme River, riding round for three hours through the north-west and west in order to cross at the drift. (The river runs east and west but bends sharply and is dangerous in rains with steep rocky banks.) Very hilly everywhere and many stones; clayey soil with shrubs and grass, and small forests in places. After riding for three hours, arrived at the farm of Frederik Potgieter, situated at the mouth of the Krom River. He lives in a good house. Sandy soil everywhere mixed with black earth. Went along the beach and found that the shore extends, always going south-west by south, from the Gamtouws River, and thereafter to the western side of the inlet, two hours south-east by east with a protruding rocky reef; but it does not go as far as the point of the Swartkops River. I also saw that this west side is all stones, while the Swartkops River generally has none. There is a high white sand dune at the point, covered with low green growth, and which separated from the protruding ridge by a flat sandy plain. Called this dune Kykduin. There are many seals on the point of this reef. A long time ago there a large ship was stranded here. A few days ago Potgieter took an old iron six-pounder to his house. The coast forms another small bay to the west, about an hour and a half in circumference, the western side of which also stony; otherwise the beach is flat, but on this whole coast the surf is violent when the wind is from the east. The western point extends south-east with another reef into the sea and this point is half an hour long. Took bearings on the eastern most part of the land to the Swartkops River point: as far as I could see: east by north a little east Also took bearings on the western coast, extending to the west and mostly rocky with the banks beginning become steep. The high grass-covered slope lies close to the sea here.

[page 37]
So far as I could see from the height here the shore runs west with many rocky, protruding reefs which form slightly receding sandy corners. I returned to Potgieter by making a long hard-going detour through the sandy plain in the green hills.
