nam brete in een cloof om voor de wind bevryd te zyn.

peilde van een hoge heuvel het gebergte omtrent Engelbregt Z:O: h o: en sag dat het selfde gebergte omtrent ses myl van t strand paralel aan t strant voortschiet tot over Oranjes rivier. Coussis mond z:w: ½ z. een quart myl.
vertrokken onse vorige weg de rivier op en spanden na drie uren rydens uit. cours n:o: t o ½ o: tot daar wy uit kouwsi draayen. de wagen van de heer Paterson daar ik voor op sat sloeg, door onagtsaamheid der leier, so als wy de oever der rivier op reden, en by starreligt om, wy waren er met ons drien in en beseerden ons weinig, dog enige kasjes braken.

Thermometer: 54-99-80; and at ten o’clock in the evening 60. Calm. The same weather and wind but not as strong. Took latitude in a kloof in order to be out of the wind.

Took bearing on the high hill in the range lying around Engelbrecht: south-east half east. Saw that the same range runs forward about six miles from the shore and parallel to the shore until across the Orange River. Kouwsie’s mouth. a quarter of a mile south-west half south

We departed on our previous road up the river and outspanned after three hours travelling. Route north-east by east half east, to where we turned away from the Kouwsie. Through the inattention of the leader, Mr Paterson’s wagon, on the front of which I was sitting, overturned by starlight as we were travelling along the bank of the river. There were three of us in it, and we were hardly harmed, but some cases were broken.
