spanden quartier voor tienen in en reden n o op. de koperbergs cloof op sagen na een en drie quartier rydens een kleine onegale vlakte voor ons, en aan de linkerhand op 500 treden distantie een klippig tegen t gebergte opgaand rif de kopermyn, zynde seer spaans groen aangeslagen.

17 noorder declinatie geeft: 29 – 36 de wind bedierf deze observatie. peilde brakke fontein berg n.o. onse uitspan plaats een 3de myl z w ½ z. uitspanplaats neigenaas fontein n ½ w.

22 Wednesday

It is not possible to find the six hills (Koperberg) from the description of Hop’s journey. It is mountainous everywhere, and the place is five hundred paces to the right side of the road in a cleft of the foothill of a mountain, two to three hundred feet above the road.
East wind; fine weather; at dawn the wind veered right north. 
Thermometer: 60--[blank]- -[blank].
Found the height of this plain to be 2360 ft.

Yoked in the oxen at a quarter to ten and rode north-east up into the Koperbergkloof. After travelling for one and three quarter hours we saw a small undulating plain ahead of us and on the left side at a distance of five hundred yards we saw a rocky ridge going up into the mountain: the copper mine, thickly tarnished with Spanish green [verdegris]. Found on the right-hand side of the road a large hole full of verdigris; where the rocks are dark one finds this excrescence.

[cancelled: Took latitude: 29 deg. — 53 min. from the zenith.] 17 northerly declination shows 29 deg. — 36 min. The wind spoilt this observation. Took bearings on Brakfonteinberg: north east of our outspan, a third of a mile south west half south; outspan to Neigenasfontein north half west.

Went to the holes where the verdigris was and found three. The largest was highest up in the cliff, and was excavated to a depth of about five feet. Searched and took many pieces away with me. Climbed further up the mountain and found the highest point in these parts, being one of the highest round rocky hills, with many herbs everywhere except the flat slabs, though it looks different from afar, especially in the summer. Its widest diameter was that most parallel to the sea. It can be taken that this is all the same range that begins at the Groen River with its kloofs and high undulating plateaux, 3700 feet above sea level.

Yoked the oxen an hour before dawn and after three hours’ travel arrived at a spring called Neigenasfontein on a high plateau surrounded by low mountains. Barometer on the plateau 2950 feet.
