vlakte tussen lotering en de beer, in een halve maan, door z riviersberg carika of buffel rivier loopt door een poort van dit gebergte. by de beer.
reden west op iets noord. door een opdragende caro vlakte, een myl tot een hoogte 400 hoger als de beer. alles het zelvde Snegebergt een en een quart myl verder nam brete, ¾ myl by bosduive droog rivier die in karika en de andere helft in zoutrivier loopt, quamen aan zoutrivier. komt uit het noord en loopt z. z:w: in berevaley onder by swarte berg. reden 2 uur en een quart, tot daar peilde goede weg geen klippen van daar 2 uur en een ½ tot zoute rivier die hier ook door een poort van de z r berg loopt. het water brak en liep weinig de care pos een ½ myl n: h o: van t de beer de soute rivier begint 2 myl agter t de beer n t o, en loopt dan met draajen westelyk. reden in 4 en ½ uur tot de Rhinoster kop. de eerste spruit van Gamka. water goed dog in kuilen maakten op de helft pad een draay om het n w om een rug cours west het selvde velt. so dat wy geen horisont in het z: zagen. aan sout berg rivier een verlate plaats.

Departed west by south through a kloof. Cold last night. A strong south-east wind blew, with some dew. Wind still south-east. Overcast, rainy sky.
Thermometer at sunrise 49 degrees to 78 degrees and fell to 56 degrees Took latitude: 32 degrees, 8 minutes. At sunset a fierce south-east wind developed. Clear and cold. At nine o’clock in the morning it was clearing. South-east wind. Fine weather. Up to noon the wind was veering to south-west. Clear. Some evaporation.
Between Lottering and De Beer there is a large flat Karoo-type plain in the shape of a half moon. The Karica or Buffels River runs through a defile in the Zoutrivier Mountains at De Beer’s. We rode west and slightly north for a mile through a rising Karoo-plain to a height 400 feet higher than De Beer’s. Everywhere the same Sneeuberg mountains. One and a quarter miles further took the latitude at the dry Bosduijve River, which runs into the Karica and its other half into the Zout River, and three quarters of a mile later came to the Zout River. This comes from the north and runs south-south-west into the Beerevlei beneath Swartberg. I rode for two and a quarter hours to where I took bearings; a good road, without stones. From there it took two and a half hours to the Zout River which here also runs through a defile in the Zoutrivier mountains. The water was brack and hardly flowing. The Care Pos is half a mile north half east from T. de Beer's. The Zout River begins half a mile north by east behind T. de Beer’s and then runs west with bends. We rode to the Rhinosterkop, at the first tributary of the Gamka, in four and a half hours. Water good but in pools. Half way we made a turn to the north- west around a ridge. Route west over the same veld, so that we didn’t see the horizon in the south. We saw an abandoned farm on the Zoutberg River.
