Gesigt van het land op de 28st: graad, 32, min: zuid: brete. 3gr: oost lengte van de Caap de Goede Hoop: beneden de Groote Waterval Aùkoerebis, in Oranje Rivier of Garieb, in het Einiquas land. Hier had ik het schoonste en singulierste gesigt in alle mijne Reisen, siende met een opslag van een oog in een halve Cirkel, twaalf Cameelpaarden; in de vyftig Oliphanten; 5 Rhinocerossen; een trop van 20 struisen; een trop van 13 koedoes, en een grote trop Zebraas; siende de Hippopotamussen in de Rivier beneden, swemmen, en samen spelen.

View of the land at the latitude of 28 degrees 32 minutes south and longitude of 3 degrees east of Cape Town, below the great Augrabies waterfall on the Orange River (also known as the Gariep) in the land of the Einiquas. Here I had the most beautiful and most singular sight in all my journeys, seeing in one glance of the eye in a semi-circle, twelve giraffes, around fifty elephants, 5 rhinoceroses, a flock of 20 ostriches, a herd of 13 kudus and a great herd of zebras, seeing also the hippopotamuses swimming and playing with each other in the river below.
In his journal entry for 15th October Gordon records seeing very many elephant, as well as rhinoceroses, ostriches and hippopotamuses, plus six giraffes about half-an-hour’s journey west of the waterfall.
