The “Heerenlogement”, a rock formation on the farm of Pieter van Zyl to the west of the confluence of the Doorn- and Olifants- rivers.

Inscription Translation

[In lower margin, hand G:]
sogenaamde here logement 3 myl zuid van oliphants rivier de plaats van pieter van zyl.
synde een hol in een klip.

So-called herenlogement [gentleman’s lodging]. Three miles south of the Olifants River, the farm of Pieter van Zyl.
Being a cavity in a boulder.

Object data

Place: The ‘Herelogement’, a cave used by European travellers in which they had inscribed their names since the first exploratory voyages in the 17th century.
Date: 15th January 1779 or 8th July 1779 or 9th January 1780
Gordon’jourals show him to have visited this spot at least thrice; 15th January 1779 is perhaps the most likely date for the drawing.
