Took bearings at our outspan: to the peak of the koppie at the widow De Beer, north-west by north, 3 degrees north; to the middle of the table, north-west by north, 5 degrees north.
Fine, calm weather. Hot. Thermometer from 67 degrees to 86 degrees falling to 80 degrees. At half-past two in the night 57 degrees. Light south-west wind.

This morning heard a lion roar. The Swartberg range is a haphazard massif, also with strata looking as if it was without verdure or grass, and not as horizontal. The land rises slowly but gently. It is totally unlike the Sneeuberg, which is also made up of flat and sharp-peaked mountains and a few round koppies. The Swartberg range is everywhere round and indented like the Hottentots and Swellendam ranges, but it is all Cos (without strata, but the front being lower than the middle and then lower again behind). The elements between this and the Sneeuberg range also stretch south-east and north-west in general, with perpendicular strata. Have seen no schistus from the Sneeuberg up to here.

We departed along the Gamka, which we crossed often, and after a three-hour journey came to the stock-farm of a certain Letig. Again had much trouble with the oxen (but this is such an essential conveyance though most uncomfortable for those unaccustomed to it). A seven hours’ journey to our outspan of the 5th. Very dusty and much plagued by blind-flies; reed and grass beside the river.
