Crocuta crocuta (Spotted hyena)

[Hand G:]

[Hand G:]
drawing of a part of a female hyena, which are found in abundance at the Cape of Good Hope, where they are called tiger-wolves, with the myth that they are male one year, female the next.

After having examined three of these animals in July 1777, I identified them as hyenas, though they have the same hallmarks, with a sack under the tail, four claws on both feet front and rear, yet their general posture and colour differ greatly from the plate in Buffon.

Their genitals, which I have never found accurately described, are certainly formed in such an unusual way, that they could easily deceive someone who is not practised in these matters. One can only look at this exceptional animal with amazement about the different orders of nature.
